ADOPT A PET: Meet Milo

ADOPT A PET: Meet Milo

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half chewed shoe or overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local pet shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers but adopting a companion for yourself or your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

According to the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, Milo is an 8-month old boy who is truly special. From his big brown eyes to his "scooty" crawl to his curl-up-in-your-lap loving, Milo is everything you could possibly want in a companion.

Woman sentenced for stealing from law firm account

ATLANTA -- A Dawsonville woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing money from an Atlanta law firm.

Ola Suzanne Stowers, 34, must also pay $260,171.94 in restitution. She pleaded guilty on Apr. 4 to charges of bank fraud and identity theft.

According to information presented in court, Stowers worked as a closing paralegal and database manager for the law firm for nearly 11 years.

In June 2008, she was instructed to close a Bank of America account that belonged to the firm. Instead, Stowers changed the account's address to that of her home and transferred $176,946.79 into it from a law firm escrow account, according to U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

Stowers allegedly began writing checks from the Bank of America account for her own personal use.

People urged not to shop, work to protest Ga. law

People urged not to shop, work to protest Ga. law

ATLANTA (AP) -- As many parts of Georgia's law cracking down on illegal immigration take effect, a Latino community group is organizing "a day without immigrants" to protest the measure.

The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights is calling for a day of non-compliance, asking businesses to close and community members to stay home and not work or shop Friday.

Alan Conner, owner of Dakota Blue restaurant in Grant Park, said he thinks the law is unjust and planned to close for lunch Friday in solidarity.

But some urge caution. Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, says skipping work without authorization could cost people jobs in a tough economic climate.

Groups are also organizing a "march for justice" on Saturday at the state Capitol to protest the law.

LOCAL PROFILE: R&B Scene in Atlanta

ATLANTA – Derived from popular genres of music like jazz, blues and gospel, rhythm and blues was born. Rhythm and Blues music, which is widely referred to as R&B, is unique in that it has the ability to take on many musical identities, at once. Some say the genre was first identified in Harlem, during the Harlem Renaissance, which is known as one of the most prominent cultural movements for African Americans during the 1930’s. However, others think the genre originated in the 1940’s when African Americans began moving to northern cities, creating cultural fusion.

The music evolved from “race music”, which was an offensive term that referred to the music of African Americans, into jump blues which was known for having a swing boogie, big band sound.
