'Footloose' opens at Cumming Playhouse

CUMMING, Ga. -- Everybody cut loose! Mello Drama Productions' staging of Footloose opens Thursday at the Cumming Playhouse.

Footloose takes place in the small town of Bomont, where dancing has been banned. When a big city boy named Ren arrives, he promises to reclaim the town for its young people.

The stage production of Footloose is based on the classic 1980s movie, which spawned such hits songs as "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear It for the Boy" and, of course, the title track. A remake of Footloose was filmed in Georgia a couple years ago.

Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Footloose runs through Apr. 21.

Local author's book gets nationwide release

Local author's book gets nationwide release

CUMMING, Ga. -- Children's author Leigh Ann Linn's latest book, Drowsy Eels on Banana Peels, will hit bookstore shelves nationwide this week.

The book teaches children how to rhyme words and have fun while reading. It is also available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Linn's publisher, Tate Publishing and Enterprises.

Linn grew up in Ohio and graduated from Kennesaw State University. She lives in Cumming with her husband and their two daughters.

A Drowsy Eels on Banana Peels book signing will be held Saturday, Apr. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Catch Air, which is located at 10950 State Bridge Road in Johns Creek.

2013 Shuler Hensley Awards nominees announced

ATLANTA -- Some of the most talented young performers in Georgia have been recognized with nominations for the 2013 Shuler Hensley Awards.

The awards program honors the best high school musical theater productions in the state.

It is named for Cobb County native Shuler Hensley, a seasoned Broadway performer who has won a number of prestigious awards, including a Tony.

This year's Shuler Hensley Awards nominees were announced Tuesday. The awards ceremony will be held Apr. 18 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Cherokee Christmas event to benefit Save the Horses

CUMMING, Ga. -- Save the Horses is hosting a Native Nativity Cherokee Christmas in Forsyth County this weekend.

The fun begins at 12 p.m. Saturday with Native American stories, food, dance and, of course, horses.

Cherokee Christmas is free to attend, but donations are strongly encouraged.

Lambert HS dancers present showcase

SUWANEE, Ga. -- The dance company at Lambert High School will perform its fall showcase this weekend.

The show, Dance in Cinema, will take place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6, 7 and 8.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. All performances are held in the school auditorium.

Lambert High is located at 805 Nichols Road in Suwanee.

Berry students win Southern Women Writers contest

Berry students win Southern Women Writers contest

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College's winners of the Southern Women Writers Conference student writing contest kicked off last weekend's event by reading their works.

The writing contest was open to female students at Berry, Georgia Highlands College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Shorter University. Blind judging was completed by Berry visiting professors Abby Greenbaum and Alex Quinlan.

In the fiction category, Berry senior and Knoxville, Tenn., resident Emily Caldwell won for her story, "A Brief Outburst of Pent-Up Aggression." The runner-up was Berry freshman Ciara Stephens of Decatur with her story, "Solo."

Berry sophomore Chelsea Fryer of Chattanooga, Tenn., won the poetry contest. Jenny VanFossen, a Georgia Highlands College sophomore, was the runner-up.
