LOCAL PROFILE: Indie Film Scene

ATLANTA, Ga. – Atlanta has come to be known as the home of young professionals, performing arts professionals and indie artists. The city that was once a breeding ground for hip-hop trends has become a haven of the aesthetic arts and artists alike.

Recently, while searching for this thriving indie artist scene in the city that is home to large-scale Tyler Perry Studios, I stumbled upon a “somewhat dormant” subculture lying low in the middle of town; it’s Atlanta’s Underground Art scene.

Just like movie buffs, members of world want to claim they were the first to see the most recent and popular cult indie films, films like “Reservoir Dogs” or “Requiem for a Dream”. Well, in Atlanta, artists can experience that excitement by visiting their local independent theatre. These theatres in most cases, have been around for 20 years, or more, are home to many of the most artistically gifted and innovative people in town.

Mia’s Pizza & Eats of Cumming, GA will open its fifth gallery in June. Young photographer Michele Mobley will be on display from June 6 until early August.

Save at Glazed & Fired

This past weekend my 5-year old son and 2-year old daughter were thrilled with excitement to give both their grandmothers a little piece of handmade love.

We had visited Glazed & Fired – a new paint your own pottery & canvas studio in Cumming – the week prior. They had so much fun picking out their pieces & their paint colors. I on the other hand tried to resist “correcting” their little masterpieces!

Gallery Display at Mia's

Mia’s Pizza and Eats of Cumming, will host a gallery display of artwork published in the NFHS 2011 literary magazine. Artwork published in the magazine will be available for purchase. All funds will go to support the production of North’s nationally recognized
literary magazine.

This is the second year Mia’s will host the North Forsyth High School Literary Magazine Release Party and Fundraiser.

DINNERS ON A DIME: Cinco de Mayo

BUFORD, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features local Cinco de Mayo eats. Every Tuesday Where U Live will choose four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal, under $20.

Cheeky’s, the Birthplace of the Beer Table, will be offering live music all day. At their Suwanee and Cumming locations, Cheeky’s will have $2 Tecate, $12 buckets of Dos Equis and Sol beers. The restaurant offers custom tacos, a list of salsas and a selection of sandwiches; entrees don’t exceed $15 and the restaurant is located at 1039 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwannee and 410 Peachtree Parkway in Cumming.

Chonas Mexican Grill in Lawrenceville will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with their regular specials. Chonas offers a long list of imported and domestic beers; they also offer classic Margaritas in, both, glasses and pitchers.
