BJ's Wholesale Club Closing 3 Metro Atlanta Stores

ATLANTA -- BJ's Wholesale Club plans to close five underperforming stores, including three in Atlanta, by the end of the month in a move meant to cut costs and enhance shareholder value, the company said Wednesday.

Set to close in metro Atlanta are stores in Norcross, Powder Springs and McDonough. Staying open are stores in Woodstock, Newnan, Conyers, East Point and Cumming.

Natick, Mass.-based BJ's Wholesale Club, which reportedly is being eyed for a hostile takeover bid, also announced plans to restructure its home office and make several management changes.

About 380 people will lose their jobs at the closed BJ's stores.

In addition to the three Atlanta stores, BJ's is closing stores in Sunrise, Fla. and in Charlotte, N.C.

--Workshops will show how to Self Certify as a WOSB-- 

A SBA workshop will be held on Jan. 13, 2011 to give an overview of the agency’s Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Program and how a company can self-certify as a WOSB.  The workshop is being held at the agency’s state office in the downtown Peachtree Center office complex, adjacent to the MARTA Peachtree Center station.  

The free workshops will run from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Alpharetta Company Donates $10,000 to Forsyth Senior Services

ALPHARETTA, GA -- An Alpharetta-based company worked hard all year to brighten the lives of seniors in Forsyth County.

The employees of Fischer Connectors, Inc. raised $10,000 for the Meals on Wheels program sponsored by Forsyth County Senior Services.

Fischer Connectors CEO and president Stephen Gosk and human resources director Diane Nolan presented the check to representatives from Forsyth County on Thursday, Dec. 16.

"This contribution will go far and feed many," said Shelley Johnson, director of the Forsyth County Senior Services Center. "We truly rely on the generosity of corporate donations to provide for the 475 seniors now receiving services through our center.

Atlanta, GA-- (submitted by Pamela Keene)  The 1071 Coalition of Lake Lanier will announce the results of its economic impact study at a public meeting on Tuesday, December 7.  The meeting will be held at Legacy Lodge at Lake Lanier Islands Resort, starting at 7pm.

The meeting is open to the public.

Hip Hop station Hot 107.9 will stop the music today from 7pm to 9pm to present “Bullying is Not Hot"

Atlanta, GA-- In the wake of terrible teen-on-teen violence that has shaken the Atlanta community, Hot 107.9 is tuening off the music and holding a forum on bullying and teen violence.  From 7pm -9pm the radio station wil stop playing music and will engage its audience in a conversation that is aimed at saving lives.

This effort to raise awareness on bullying will feature a panel of guests including; Atlanta Police Officer James Polite, local school guidance counselors, Monique Rivarde (mother of 18 yr old Bobby Tillman who was recently bullied to death) and several students who have been bullied by their peers.   Additionally national recording artists and celebrities including Neyo, Queen Latifah, Jazmine Sullivan, Jamie Foxx, Ray J and Diddy will all have a special message on the topic in hopes that students will understand the seriousness of this issue.
