Mark Williams recommended for DNR commissioner by Gov. Perdue and Gov. Elect Deal

 

ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) - Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue and Gov.-elect Nathan Deal have recommended state Rep. Mark Williams to be commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Under state law, the DNR board appoints the commissioner with the approval of the governor. The board plans to consider Williams' nomination this week.

Williams, a Republican from Jesup, is a businessman and former school teacher. He has a degree in biology from Georgia College and State University.

Once appointed Williams will succeed Chris Clark.

Paulding E-911 Hosts Law Enforcement Officials From Mexico

DALLAS, GA -- On Wednesday, Nov. 17, Paulding County E-911 hosted a tour of the 911 Center for the police commissioner of the city of Monterrey, Mexico.

A city of approximately 1.3 million people, Monterrey is the largest industrial center in Mexico and is looking to upgrade its emergency communications center. The city chose two 911 centers in Georgia to visit to observe operations and see how computer-aided dispatch systems work in a U.S.

Photogenic baby from Cumming will be featured in the new issue of Babytalk Magazine

Atlanta, GA--  A local Cumming baby, Kolsen Chisholm, was a finalist in the Babytalk/GMA Digital Cover Contest and is featured in Babytalk’s December/January 2011 issue!

Kolsen was one of eight semi-finalists and received an all-expense-paid trip to New York City for a professional photo shoot in September.  From the photos taken at the shoot three finalists were selected to appear on Good Morning America Digital where visitors voted to choose the winning baby, who appears on the cover of the December/January 2011 issue of Babytalk magazine.

On set, Kolsen was given the name "Cheeks" and his "It Factor" was his bright eyes.

Students and Parents Encouraged to Attend College Fair on Tuition Assistance

Atlanta, GA--  Councilman Aaron Watson and School Board member, Yolanda Johnson have teamed up with The Scholarship Academy in an effort to help Atlanta students and parents secure funding for college.  The "I am College Material" Fair will take place on Wednesday 11/17 from 4pm-8pm at the Atrium in Atlanta City Hall.

The Federal Pell Grant and Georgia HOPE are both facing major shortages in the coming years, and the councilman want families to start planning now for their educational futures.

The Scholarship Academy is a local nonprofit scholarship preparatory program that has launched this "I am College Material" Scholarship Fair.  

The event will introduce “average students” to the private scholarship application process.

Keep Hall Beautiful Director Receives State Honor

Atlanta, GA--  Keep Hall Beautiful’s Cindy Reed was awarded the Barbara Mason Award for Executive Director of the Year at the Keep Georgia Beautiful Awards Luncheon last week in Atlanta. 

The award is named in honor of Barbara Mason, who dedicated her life to preserving the environment and establishing the Keep America Beautiful system in Georgia and the nation.  Under her leadership, significant improvements were made in Georgia in the areas of waste reduction, conservation of resources, property maintenance, quality of life and beautification.
