ADOPT A PET: Meet Gomer

ADOPT A PET: Meet Gomer

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half chewed shoe or overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local pet shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers but adopting a companion for yourself or your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

According to the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, Gomer is a one year old boy who is truly special. He has a happy sweet temperament. Still being a puppy he is active and loves to play. Gomer ia a real diamond in the rough.

CUMMING: Students spend school day serving others

CUMMING: Students spend school day serving others

CUMMING, Ga. -- In a small room at the Humane Society of Forsyth County, a group of students is spending the school day petting small feral kittens.

"They're actually socializing the animals so that they can become good pets," said Lance White, chairman of the board for the Humane Society of Forsyth County.

It's on a day they would normally spend going from math to science to language arts classes at Piney Grove Middle School in Forsyth County.

But, school officials cancelled classes.

In all, nearly 1,200 students, staff and parent volunteers from Piney Grove spent the day at 50 Forsyth County charities.

"It seems that we spend all year long talking about what we're going to test," said Forsyth County Superintendent Buster Evans. "This is a life test. There are a lot of things we measure and test about success. This is something that they'll be able to carry with them throughout their life."
